Ghana’s Black Stars may be able to break the spell and win the Africa Cup of Nations today by beating Ivory Coast—in  a match which will kick off in few hours (19:00GMT).

Both teams have had eerily similar campaigns. They both breezed through qualifying, but then had the slowest of starts to the competition. Both topped their groups, and then went on to win both the quarter and semi finals by scoring three goals in each game.

Aside the similarity in their progress in this tournament, the biggest backdrop to this clash of giants is the history behind this clash. Amidst the plethora of matches the two teams have contested in, none looms larger than the 1992 African Cup Final in Senegal.

That contest in Dakar ended with Cote d’Ivoire lifting the trophy after penalties, their first and only AFCON win to date. That Black Stars team was led by- excluding the final where he was unable to play due to suspension- Ghana’s soccer maestro Abedi Ayew Pele.

It was a painful defeat, especially as Ghana had a very star studded team who was everyone’s favourites. A little over twenty years later, a chance has popped up for Ghana to avenge that defeat.

The Black Stars have been steadily improving over the course of the tournament, and since that first round loss have scarcely looked back. They are genuinely improving game by game, each performance somehow supplanting the sublime one that came before.

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kick-started on Saturday-17th January at Equatorial Guinea. The host nation stepped in to host the tournament after Morocco refused to host due to Ebola fears and subsequently got banned from the tournament.

Equatorial Guinea took on Congo in the opening game of the tournament, a game that ended in 1-1 draw. In the second game, Gabon breezed past Group favourites Burkina Faso 2-0.

Yesterday, we saw Zambia taking on Congo DR whilst Tunisia tried on Cape Verde for size. The two enthralling games both ended in 1-1 stalemates, marking three 1-1 draws out of four games at the tourney.

Today at 16:00 GMT, the Ghana Black Stars will go head to head with Senegal—and GhanaCelebrities.Com will be running an interesting live commentary here + live broadcast of the match here.

Ghana’s Black Stars would be hoping to annex our fifth nation’s cup crown, 32 years after winning the fourth in Libya. Recent tournaments have not been too kind to the Black Stars, finishing fourth at both South Africa 2013 and Gabon-Equatorial Guinea 2012, after winning silver at Angola 2010.

The Stars have made the semi finals for the past four consecutive AFCON tournaments, and after the disappointment of Brazil Ghanaians would certainly be expecting just a little bit more from the side this time around. It’s going to matter little, in the final reckoning, that Avram Grant is a new manager who has had barely any time to get to know his side.

Asamoah Gyan, now a veteran of several tournaments, leads the side. A hugely talented side would rely heavily on his goals, and without any productivity from Baby Jet it’s difficult to see us progressing past a group stage rightly labelled the Group of Death.

Senegal has always been difficult, and the attacking talent this side is brimming with is enough to give all the other coaches in the group splitting migraines. Compact and powerful, they would be the Stars’ first opponents and would serve as a suitable litmus test to what the Stars might be able to accomplish in Equatorial Guinea.
