Shatta Wale beat the likes of Shane Eagle (South Africa), Toofan (Togo), Sauti Sol (Kenya), Dadju (Congo), Fatoumata Diawara (Mali), Hamza EL Fadly (Morocco), Bebe Cool (Uganda), Bruna Tatiana (Angola) and Tiwa Savage (Nigeria) to win the award.
The annual Global Citizen Festival took place over the weekend in New York—and the festival saw as much as over 60,000 people at New York City’s Central Park in celebration of music and activism.
This year, the festival reminded each and everybody that we are not a generation of bystanders—and pushed for the realization of the United Nation’s #GlobalGoals .
Hosted by Hugh Jackman and Stephen Colbert, the festival was headlined by Pearl Jam, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay—Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Olivia Wilde, Bono and several other international celebrities made appearance.
Africa was not left out, after all it was a global festival—African music stars-Mafikizolo, Yemi Alade, Diamond, Sauti Sol, Toofan, Becca and Sarkodie performed “Tell Everybody,” a song that promotes the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
