South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in jail for the 2013 murder of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius initially received a five year sentence on the charge of culpable homicide (manslaughter), a sentence for which he served ten months before being released on parole.
Oscar Pistorius would have to stand trial for murder, after state prosecutors won their appeal for his culpable homicide charge to be set aside.
Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide last year, after he shot his then girlfriend; model Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s day 2013. The trial judge ruled Pistorius should stand trial for culpable homicide rather than murder, and thus the athlete was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty.
Oscar Pistorius might no longer be in prison as he’s currently under house arrest– but if prosecutors would have their way, the athlete would spend much more time in prison.
Oscar was jailed in October last year for the 2013 killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He shot her through the bathroom door, claiming he thought burglars had burst into the house.
Oscar Pistorius’ five year prison sentence meant he is eligible for parole after ten months inside, but since becoming eligible his move to go under house arrest keeps hitting snags.
It was initially thought it would happen in August, but that got blocked at the last minute by the Justice Ministry.
