It is well known that music is a universal language: where different dialects and accents can breed misunderstanding, music is something that everyone can connect to, old or young. It is a very powerful weapon that can influence moods and sometimes even affect our outlook on life. It triggers emotions, especially if the music you are listening to is tied to nostalgia.

Remember when these names made headlines in-thing back in the day: Sonny Achiba, Ex-Doe, T Blaze, Terry Bonchaka and Lord Kenya? Well it was a delightful feast for the ears at the much hyped ‘Back in the Day’ Concert which took place at the Conference Centre in Accra last night.

The entire atmosphere just brought back a lot of memories: big afros with a retro spin, baggy pants and generally just an immense love for the classics, both Ghanaian and foreign with DJ Nii Ayi killing it with the records.

Even before the show started, everyone was either bobbing their head or singing along. Despite, the delay in kick off (Ghana man time) it was an amazing night with T bLaze, Th4 Kwages, Reggie Rockstone and Obrafour burning up the stage and reminding us why we loved their hit songs back in the day.

There was also a tribute to some of the fallen stars that we adored back in the day—Ronnie Coaches, Nelson Mandela and Terry Bonchaka were all remembered. But nothing beat the main attraction of the night- ‘Naughty by Nature’. It was great seeing them live and not just on the radio or on TV as the crowd went crazy with a lot of their hit songs from back in the day, including those we didn’t even know.

My favorite part of the night was the treats! I mean, who doesn’t miss ‘Poki’ and ‘Alewa’! God bless Empire Entertainment, for paying attention to that little detail. It was one heck of a blast from the past!

Performances at the event were GREAT, patrons got more than their money worth and it was a real ‘Back in the Day’ experience. However, I think attendance could have been better…

Grammy Award winning Hip Hop trio-‘Naughty By Nature’ (formed in 1989) which consist of Treach (Anthony Criss), Vin Rock (Vincent Brown), and the DJ Kay Gee (Keir Gist) landed in Accra last night and are well set for tonight’s MEGA ‘Back in the Day’ Concert…

All roads lead to the Accra International Conference tonight-6^th December, 2013 (7pm) where ‘Naughty By Nature’ will mount the ‘Back in the Day’ Concert stage alongside Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour, T-Blaze and TH4Kwages to thrill patrons with electrifying performances…

As we announced yesterday, it will not just be a musical back in the day experience—organizers will also serve some of the 1990s favorite goodies including ‘Poki’ and ‘Alewa’ at tonight’s concert, so you can have a full-blown ‘Back in the Day’ experience.

As Ghana gears up for this year’s ‘Back In The Day’ concert, organizers have disclosed that patrons, who will be attending will be served some of the 1990s favourite goodies including ‘Poki’ and ‘Alewa’.

The two goodies, one an ice cream – Poki – and the other a candy – Alewa – gained popularity in the 1990s and they were the favourites of kids and the youth of that era.

As the ‘Back In The Day’ concert gears up for a showdown on December 6 at the Accra International Conference Centre, organizers say the ‘Poki’ and ‘Alewa’ are part of the 1990s goodies that fans should expect on the day.

Grammy Award winning Hip Hop trio-‘Naughty By Nature’ made up of Vin Rock (Vincent Brown), DJ Kay Gee (Keir Gist) and Treach (Anthony Criss) will touch down in Accra on Thursday, 5^th December, 2013 for Friday’s MEGA ‘Back in the Day’ Concert, to be held at the Accra International Conference Centre.

According to Bola Ray, CEO of Empire Entertainment (organizers of the ‘Back in the Day’ Concert), all is set for the American Hip-Hop group to take center stage on Friday-6^th December, 2013 and thrill fans with great performances.

With ‘Naughty by Nature’ ready to take us back to the days of their hit song “O.P.P.” which was massively enjoyed in Ghana, we will definitely have a lot to relate to on the night—and a lot to bring back those sweet memories.

Despite his inherent ‘show-offness’, he is not just called the Grandpapaz for nothing—he started a whole music genre which has become the strongest in Ghana, called Hiplife…

From where some of us sit, Hiplife has become more than a musical genre. It is not far from a movement or a lifestyle as it has its own unique & intriguing identity.

Reggie Rockstone (real name Reginald Osei) was born in United Kingdom but it may have been his subsequent stay in United States of America which sparked the whole Hiplife movement in him.

Riding on the back of the then Hip Hop culture which he was over exposed to, Reggie succeeded in knitting a genre so close to Hip Hop in one sense but so far from it in terms of style, language and audience…

Like most movements, it started at isolated corners—unnoticed. But it is said that, by 1994, Reggie Rockstone had attained a huge following—and had succeeded in choking the millions of Ghanaians with what at the time was seen as having no future…

I hate to look at the many awards Reggie Rockstone has won because that is not the perfect indication of his achievements. For the best outlook at his accomplishment, just think HIPLIFE!
