As part of the GMW Festival celebration (ongoing at the National Theatre), the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana MUSIGA, Bice ‘Obour’ Osei Kuffour, admonished radio stations across the nation to play only music of Ghanaian origin on Monday 3rd March, 2014 –which marked the opening of the music festival for this week.
GhanaCelebrities.Com therefore decided to put our ears on the grounds by monitoring at least 80% of the radio stations we have in the city – Accra (because the writer stays in Accra). Unfortunately, all the radio stations we monitored played their normal daily songs.
DJs and presenters who play reggae/ragga/dancehall did play! Those who play RnBs or old school blues did play! Those who play hip hop did play! Those who mix all the aforementioned genres of music also did play! And finally was those who play highlife; they did play too!
The whole atmosphere on radio did not change. However, MUSIGA had wanted all radio stations to play our rich Highlife music, since the weeklong music celebration is all about celebrating Ghanaian music and its artistes.
