In 2011, Yayra-E.-Nego, a complete ‘alien’ was brought in from abroad and was presented as a ‘Ghanaian’ though she could not speak any Ghanaian language. She was shockingly crowned Miss Universe Ghana to represent Ghana— and that is when it became obvious that Miss Universe Ghana had lost its legs but each year, desperate empty headed young Ghanaians with nothing to do with their time and money continue to participate.
It emerged at the time that, Yayra E. Nego did not meet the 6 months residence requirement, had no strong connection with Ghana, that is why she could not speak any of the many Ghanaian languages. Yet she was crowned Miss Universe Ghana, to represent Ghana and serve as a Ghanaian ambassador.
The truth is, more young women are becoming smarter which has led to the decline in participation and interest all around the world in Beauty Pageants, especially in Ghana.
Coupled with the fact that most of these Beauty Pageant organisers do not honour their promises in terms of prize packages to the winners, the Beauty Pageant industry is on its last legs.
For the last few years, young women have ditched the beauty motto to give credence to smartness and intelligence. Gone are the days when women were on ‘cloud 9’ the moment you zoom in on their beauty—today, they prefer you to acknowledge their excellence and intelligence.
A lot of these Beauty Pageants organise in Ghana have become a JOKE—full of rigging and corruption, with the organisers being the sole beneficiaries. And Miss Universe Ghana is the leader in this messy business.
In the past, GhanaCelebrities.Com has had issues with the organizers for bringing to light their corrupt and cheating practices—and shaming them. Since then, we’ve decided not to really pay much attention to a rotten pageant—mostly contested by air heads and organised by cheats.
Few years down the line, Miss Universe Ghana still continues to operate but in a full glory of absurdity which came to light at the just ended Miss Universe World pageant—where Ghana was represented by Abena Appiah.

I surely need some education and convincing on this issue….According to Ameyaw Debrah who sat as a judge alongside Rodney Quarcoo, Valentina Sweetie Forte, Claudia Kwarteng-Lumor, Dehner Henry and Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Luis Fernando de Andrade Serra, Miss Yayra Nego (pictured above) has been chosen as Miss Universe Ghana.
Yea, you read me right, she is Miss Universe Ghana 2011. Yayra Nego who has a Ghanaian father from the Volta Region and American mother was picked as the winner of Miss Universe Ghana yesterday at the Movenpick Ambssador Hotel, Accra.
What is my problem here? On a prima facie look, the below are my concerns…
By convention and what I know, the winner of Miss Universe Ghana will represent Ghana as a Ghanaian on the Miss Universe World platform to compete with similar winners from various countries. This begs the question, what does this chick know about Ghana and what can she represent in terms of Ghana?
From the video interview below, the chick does not sound Ghanaian. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying you got to have a thick Ghanaian accent to be embraced as a Ghanaian, but on such platform, being in touch with the culture of the country you represent is fundamental. Can she speak any Ghanaian language? Language is a corner stone to culture.
