After Ghana Watched Azonto to Die Without Making Huge Capital Out Of It – A Corporate Body is Now Investing in Teaching ‘Dead’ Azonto

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9BbTRXCPjY

The above video is a BBC Report on Azonto when it was at its peak

A recent online report has it that Hiplife musician – also credited by some write ups as Ghana’s King of Azonto, Gasmilla, has been contracted by telecommunication giant Airtel, to teach the proper way to dance Azonto at all Airtel Rising Stars events around the country.

Gasmilla, often described as the inventor of Ghana’s famous Azonto dance, according to the report, will engage fans during break time for Airtel Rising Stars’ and teach them Azonto. However, the naked truth is, Azonto is dead! Azonto – whether one considers it as a music or dance form, is no more! So why would Airtel contract Gasmilla to teach it now?

When the whole Azonto craze was buzzing all over the country, where was Airtel? Far less people dance Azonto today! Azonto songs don’t enjoy airplay any longer on radio! Artist – including Gasmilla, are not recording more songs with Azonto rhythm!

The report goes further to state that “Gasmilla said I will be teaching fans the right way to dance Azonto and Azonto plus which include moves like Alkaeeda and Kobay also known as Amanda. My target is to teach at least 10,000 people how to do the Azonto.”

How many people may be interested in learning Azonto now? What for? At a time artists are no longer recording Azonto songs? Teaching and or learning Azonto now is akin to the proverbial scenario of carrying ones bucket out to harvest water after a heavy pour of rain. The rain (Azonto) is over or has stopped so which rain water is there to fetch?

AZONTO VS GANGNAM STYLE: Which Of These Has The Staying Power?

psy-gangnam-style-1

We all know that dance is a universal art. Different types of dance forms have evolved over the years ranging from Crunk, Shuffle, Harlem shake, Crip walk, Popping, Locking, Break dance and the likes.

We have also had countries and sect of people come up with their own dance moves. However in recent times, the two most popular dance moves which seem to have taken over the global scene are our evry own Azonto and Gangnam Style.

Personally, I think the Gangnam has a larger audience than Azonto even though critics say that it is a rip off of the Azonto. Whatever the case may be both dance moves keep cashing and drawing in hundreds and hundreds of lovers to it, through tutorials and parody videos all over the internet.

I have heard some people say, like all dance moves come and go the Azonto- Gangnam style is just a phase or era.  Hmm, is that true?  I know some are itching to make your pick based on one queer reason or another but wait a minute below is something brief on the dance forms you should consider before you make your decision.

Azonto

Originally from Ghana, this dance is the fever that has dominated club, parties and tutorial videos all over the internet. According to Wikipedia, the dance “incorporates complex co-ordinates body movement and non-verbal communication in a rhythmic fashion in very few one-two timed steps. Just like most African dances, knee bending and hip movements are rudiments to dancing it. The dance has effectively evolved from a few rudimentary moves to embrace depictions of ironing, washing, driving, boxing, grooming, praying, swimming, and others.”

Most people say that the dance gained world wide audience from Sarkodie’s tune, You Go Kill Me‘which has over 1,320,420 Youtube views. However, ODG Fuse’s ‘Azonto‘  with 7,633,146 Youtube views, which shows you how to do the azonto steps has pushed the dance beyond far borders.

Gangnam

Out of the most unlikely place like South Korea comes a new dance that is steadily taking the world by storm. Korean singer, PSY has popularized the dance Gangnam style.

Gangnam style seems to be taking the winning prize as the most viral dance video. Though the moves are funny and cheesy, the video has gotten a total of over 1 Billion views on youtube. The dance is performed by doing a comical horse riding dance and footsteps. It also involves swinging an arm in circles over one’s head while still doing the leg movements. The dance video has gained popularity over the online community and is still growing by the second.

Random Ridiculousness: School Kids In Ghana Being Taught AZONTO Instead Of…

Look, this whole AZONTO crazy is fun but it is getting ridiculous. Is it that African’s over do things or we just take delight in messing things up? Okyeame Kwame Denies Saying 'Azonto Killed My Music', He Says He Was Misquoted!

blank
One of Ghana’s finest rappers Okyeame Kwame who doubles as the C.E.O. of one of the youngest label in Ghana, One Mic Entertainment has denied ever saying that Azonto has killed his music.
The Rap Doctor as he is warmly called expressed shock at news that he said “Azonto has killed my music”. The rapper was quoted as saying that the recent dance turned music genre ‘azonto’ has killed his ‘Faithful’ and ‘Sika’ tunes.
The report further stated that whiles other artistes smiled to the bank during the festive season, the rapper was left to mourn because of his inability to break the ‘azonto’ craze with his songs which are on slow pace. He was also quoted as saying that his song ‘Sika’, he released before Christmas was thrown into the bin by Ghanaians because of the proliferation of ‘azonto’.
Kwame has denied the above, saying it was totally imaginary of the writer and misrepresentation of what he said. According to him, this is the conversation he had with a presenter in December.
“In December a presenter called me and asked me series of questions in connection with MUSIGA and the festivities. He asked me how my album is doing and I told him One Mic [Entertainment] made a mistake of releasing ‘Sika’ one week before Christmas because people are in festive mood, people do not want to go and listen to pensive and melancholic songs like ‘Sika’, they want to party, so common sense suggests that they listen to ‘azonto’ so they can do the current dance.”

Vote Now: Azonto Killed Ghana Music-Yes Or No!

blank
2011 was an ‘Azonto’ year. Hate it or love it, it has become a global phenomenon. Its introduction and immediate success opened the floodgate for the rest to follow.
There are many who thinks the introduction of ‘Azonto’ in Ghana has killed good music. I readily concur with them. But I belong to the group of people who thinks that the introduction of ‘Azonto’ has helped in the promotion of Ghana music over the world.
Unlike other form of dances, ‘Azonto’ has become contagious and caught up with everyone, even the white man on the streets of London to the old woman in Chorkor to the Pastor in my church to my little nephew.
Several years ago, Nigerian songs were the toast of Ghanaians. Songs from the most populous nation in Africa were preferred to songs produced in Ghana. For whatever reasons, some Ghanaian musicians started copying blindly the Nigerian accent.
