2015 AFCON: DR Congo Beats Equatorial Guinea on Penalties to Win Bronze Medal

Kidiaba

The third place play-off has never been the most loved of games- two losing semi-finalists have to come and pretend failing to make the final doesn’t sting. Judging by the celebration by the DRC after the final whistle though, it seems like they do not mind the bronze medal one bit.

After 90 minutes of football that did not feature all that much action, the game moved straight to the dreaded penalty shootouts. The hosts’ showed a remarkable lack of composure from the spot, losing to the DRC by 4-2.

Having both lost semi-finals to more illustrious opponents, neither side seemed particularly driven to pick that third place. Equatorial Guinea looked a little livelier, but the game suffered from a lack of chances that made it into a snooze fest.

The closest anyone got was when Congolese midfielder Cedrick Mabwati made an insane run through the home defence, but then elected to pass when one-on-one with Felipe Ovono. The pass caught Mbokani a off guard, and he was unable to finish the opportunity.

Champions in 2012, Zambia had had a particularly poor opening to the tournament, but entered the final group game knowing a victory might probably be enough to send them through.

And the 1-1 draw in the other game meant even a 1-0 would have sufficed, but a dour game saw both sides unable to muster the quality needed to overpower the other.

Zambia had two great chances late on to snatch the unlikely victory, but Kangwa and Mulenga both fluffed their lines, ending the game in a goalless stalemate and eliminating both sides.

Ghana Drawn in Group of Death At 2015 AFCON

Black Star

The draw for the 2015 African Cup of Nations took place earlier tonight in Malabo and fans of the Black Stars would not be having a fun night contemplating the ramifications of the draw.

Ghana has landed in the fabled ‘Group of Death’, alongside South Africa, Senegal, and Algeria.

With a new coach who just assumed responsibilities today, barely a month to the tournament and a team in disarray from their worst world cup campaign, getting a good group would have been essential in any hopes of going far in the tournament.

It seems now that was just a pipe dream, and now any ambitions would have to be fulfilled through the hard way.

South Africa had one of the best qualifying campaigns on the continent, sailing through unbeaten whilst knocking out defending champions Nigeria. Algeria was the best African side at the world cup and in the intervening months have shown little signs of slowing down. Senegal’s Teranga Lions are always a huge threat.
