Celestine Donkor Opens Up About Growing Up in a Family of 15

Gospel musician Celestine Donkor recently opened up about the hardships she faced during her childhood,  on the ‘Grass to Grace’  edition of  ‘Just Being Us’  with MzGee, Celestine revealed how she and her 14 siblings grew up in a humble home, all living together in a single chamber and hall.

Reflecting on her upbringing in a compound house shared with 11 other neighbours, she described how her parents managed to raise 15 children with limited resources. One of the fondest and most remarkable memories she shared was of the “miracle pot,” a single pot of food that somehow always stretched to feed the entire family.

Celestine recalled with admiration how her mother, despite their financial struggles, engaged in petty trading to provide for the family. “We didn’t have much, but the way my mother made sure there was always enough food for all of us was nothing short of a miracle,” she fondly noted.

The Ewe gospel singer also reminisced about her childhood spent in a crowded compound house in Abeka, where 12 families lived together. She often slept on a couch, but the love and support from her family made their humble home a place of gratitude and faith.
