Ghanaian lawyer Martin Kpebu jumped to the defence of Sammy Gyamfi over his dollar-sharing scandal, arguing that rather than being in the wrong, Gyamfi was rather wronged as the recording entity breached his right to privacy.
Speaking on The Key Points programme on TV3 Ghana on Saturday, May 17, 2025, Kpebu said Sammy Gyamfi attempted to shield his act of charity from the public and did so in his car, however, a third party recorded the video and shared it online, sparking a furore over what should be a normal act.
He said calls for Gyamfi’s resignation were overblown because he was the victim in the situation.
“Article 18 of our constitution guarantees our right to privacy…you have a right to privacy,” Martin Kpebu said. “When it got to counting of the money, he entered the car… If he wanted to do it publicly, display opulence, what would have stopped him from reaching into the car, take the money and come back and start counting?” Kpebu asked.
He said Gyamfi was attempting to be discreet, even turning his back to shield his counting from public view. Kpebu said every piece of evidence from the video showed Gyamfi’s intention was to keep things on the downlow, but ended up having his privacy breached by a third party he was unaware of.

“Let’s slow down, let’s not run ahead of ourselves…it’s a breach of his right to privacy,” Kpebu continued.
He concluded that Sammy Gyamfi broke no law and was not in possession of an amount of money that cannot be explained by his income, therefore, he is in the clear, and the decision not to sanction him was the right one.
In a previous interview with TV3’s sister station, 3FM, Martin Kpebu argued that Sammy Gyamfi should not be vilified, otherwise it will chill acts of generosity from the political class, whose benevolence helps feed many poor Ghanaians.
