President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that he has not been paid since taking office on January 7, 2025.
Mahama revealed this stunning occurrence during a speech addressing the progress of his newly introduced Ghana Medical Trust Fund policy, which is popularly known as MahamaCares.
During the launch of MahamaCares on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the President announced the donation of six months of his Presidential salary to the fund.
However, speaking on Friday, May 16th, the President revealed that he has yet to receive his salary since taking office, making him unable to make good on his pledge to donate to the fund.
“Government’s resources will not be sufficient [for the fund], and that’s why we decided to do fundraising to be able to top up whatever government is giving. And I kickstarted it with six months of my salary,” the President said. “Unfortunately, I have been checking my bank account and I haven’t started receiving a salary yet.”

Mahama queried the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, over why whatever administrative issue delaying his salary has not been resolved. He added that he is not even aware of how much six months of his salary is worth; however, when the payments arrive, they will be transferred to the fund.
“I don’t know how much six months of my salary is worth but I can assure you as soon as the Accountant-General starts crediting my salary to my account, I will write a cheque…to support the MahamaCares initiative,” he added.
The President announced the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund during a launch ceremony held in April.
The MahamaCares initiative, which was a campaign promise of the NDC, is targeted at providing financial assistance to Ghanaians living with chronic diseases, including diabetes, cancer, kidney failure, stroke, and complications from hypertension.
These non-communicable diseases are typically not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme, and MahamaCares aims to fill that gap in coverage by providing for the treatment, medication, and cost of care for people living with these ailments.
