President John Dramani Mahama finally reacted to the dollar-gift saga involving the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), Sammy Gyamfi.

Mahama, speaking during a speech delivered at his ongoing thank-you tour in Dodowa, alluded to the controversy by making light of the situation.

President Mahama gifted a traditional group an amount of cash following a performance that sang his praises and wowed the crowd.

After gifting the dancer some cash, the President took to the podium to deliver a speech and cracked a joke that lightly referenced the Gyamfi controversy.

“Let me begin by commending the cultural troupe for the very beautiful performance they gave us,” President Mahama said. “And to put on record that the money that I gave was Ghc 500 and not dollars,”

The retort elicited some laughter from the gathered crowd.

President John Dramani Mahama resumed his nationwide ‘Thank you’ tour on Friday, May 16th, 2025, with a stop in Dodowa.

The President addressed a durbar held at the Old Ghanata Astro Turf Park.

Mahama has already visited the Volta, Western, Central, Upper East, Northern, and Upper West regions before holding this Greater Accra Regional leg of the tour.

Sammy Gyamfi dollar-sharing scandal

Seasoned National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator and the acting head of the Goldbod agency, Sammy Gyamfi, was embroiled in a political firestorm after he was captured on video gifting some dollar bills to controversial ‘woman of God’, Evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Agradaa pestered the politician for money after a chance meeting in town.

Gyamfi entered his car to count out some dollar bills to give to Agradaa, but the incident was recorded on video, sparking a furore. Gyamfi was lambasted for flashing wads of dollar bills.

The opposition NPP called for Gyamfi to be fired, but the Presidency announced that no further action would be taken against the lawyer beyond an apology he issued and a caution from the Chief of Staff.

President Mahama has yet to comment on the saga, making his light-hearted comment the first time he’s acknowledged arguably the first major scandal of his second term.
