Private Ghanaian legal practitioner Martin Kpebu jumped to the defence of Sammy Gyamfi by noting that he did nothing wrong in gifting Nana Agradaa some money, but his only crime was getting ‘caught’ on camera.
Speaking in an interview with 3FM 92.7 in Accra, Kpebu said he was surprised at the attention that the issue has generated because he had thought it was a normal thing for politicians like Sammy Gyamfi to gift people cash and other items.
Kpebu said Sammy Gyamfi has done nothing wrong because he carried out an act of benevolence in his private vehicle that was unfortunately publicised.
He said many politicians are often forced to give ordinary Ghanaians money and other things because of the conditions of people in the country, and none of them get into trouble due to the fact that it’s done in private.
Kpebu argued that Gyamfi also attempted to carry out his benevolence in private but had his space invaded by a ‘paparazzi’, turning a simple issue into a major scandal.

“…He entered the car and counted the money. So it’s the paparazzi that snooped in on him. I think we should start the analysis at that point,” Martin Kpebu told Arnold Ocansey on 3FM. “He entered the car; he didn’t stand publicly to count the money. He entered the car and counted, then a camera was put in there so he didn’t see.”
Kpebu called for the media and politicians to be careful with their analysis of this issue because vilifying Gyamfi too much will chill the acts of benevolence from politicians that sustain the livelihood of many poor Ghanaians.
“The car is his private space; that car is not a public space. Within the car, it’s his private space, and he didn’t invite people in…it’s Agradaa who stood by it (the car),”
Kpebu added that the issue is complex, but the fact remains that Sammy Gyamfi did nothing that other politicians do not do regularly; his only problem was getting recorded, taking the issue into another dimension.
He added that politicians should keep on gifting their constituents and other Ghanaians in private because the current mood of the country means that if they are caught, they will get into trouble just like Sammy Gyamfi.
