The Member of Parliament for Akuapim North constituency in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Sammi Awuku, has scored President John Mahama 48% in regards to his performance on the 120-day social contract with Ghanaians.

Speaking on PM Express on Joy News in relation to President Mahama’s speech addressing the nation on his promises, Awuku said the government failed on certain key promises, bringing down their grade.

He also said certain promises, which were fulfilled, such as the scraping of taxes, were mere smokescreens as the government found other ways to tax Ghanaians more, such as by raising utility prices.

“They have imposed 14% tariff increase when it comes to electricity. They are also asking us to pay an additional 4% on water,” Awuku said.

He further noted that the government scrapped targeted taxes while raising the prices of universal tariffs which affect all Ghanaians.

“If I do not stake lotto, I’m definitely not going to be affected by 10% betting tax. If I do not engage in electronic transactions, there is no way I’m going to suffer from this 1% e-levy, whether it’s in place or not. However, getting access to power and light is no longer a luxury and every Ghanaian desires to have it. That’s a clear case of robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

Government responds

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister in charge of Government Communications, responded to Awuku’s claims, declaring that the Mahama-led government had mostly fulfilled all promises in its social contract.

According to him, they made 26 promises to Ghanaians, out of which 20 had been fulfilled and six others are in the process of being fulfilled.

“Some of the promises involved processes that the public were unaware of,” Kwakye-Ofosu said, noting those processes are being carried out. “These things because you may not know or be aware of…what you need to bring them to finality lies in the hands of other agencies,”
