Dr Yaw Adutwum Hints at 2028 Presidential Run

The Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region and a former Minister of Education, Honourable Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced he’s considering joining the 2028 NPP flagbearer race.

Dr Adutwum made his plans known during an interview with UTV Ghana.

The Bosomtwe legislator said while he is considering joining the race, he has yet to make a final decision. He promised to inform Ghanaians once he has made up his mind after consultation with his pastors and other critical stakeholders.

“My pastors are praying, God crowns kings. Many Ghanaians are also calling me and asking me to run. At the right time, I will make my plans known for all Ghanaians to know. I will announce it very soon,” Dr Adutwum said.

The former Education Minister, who held the position during the second term of the Akufo-Addo Presidency, was lauded during his time in office as an effective minister. He oversaw the NPP government’s signature Free SHS policy and is credited with bringing improvements to the program.

2028 NPP Flagbearer race

Despite being only six months out from the previous elections, NPP politicians have already kicked off the flagbearer race with the top two contenders from the previous cycle battling it out to establish their dominance.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who was the party’s 2024 flagbearer and lost to current President John Dramani Mahama, organised a nationwide ‘thank you’ tour that opponents called a campaign launch in disguise. His main opponent from the party’s 2024 flagbearer race, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, initially joined the tour before withdrawing and announcing his own 2028 campaign.

Bawumia and Agyapong are once again expected to be frontrunners for the 2028 race, but Dr Adutwum, with his background and experience in politics – he is serving his third term as Bosomtwe MP – is expected to prove a formidable opponent if he joins the race.
