God Has Chosen Me to Be NPP’s Next Chairman – Wontumi Announces

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has announced plans to run for the party’s National Chairman position.

Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, said in a viral video that God has chosen him to become the next National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“I have spoken to God, and the favour I have found before Him and the favor He has caused me to find before men will be a pivotal factor of my victory as National Chairman when the time comes,” Wontumi said.

The NPP’s longtime Ashanti Regional Chairman said God has selected him to lead the party forward towards its next great victory.

He added: “When the time comes, I will also go and pick forms and apply as a contestant for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party. And with all due respect, I will bring my contributions and experience to facelift the NPP and bring us victory in 2028,”

Wontumi, a businessman and gold miner, was elected Chairman of the NPP in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region, in 2014. He won reelection in 2018 and 2022.

He was a staunch supporter of Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during the party’s 2024 flagbeaer race.

Rifts deepening in NPP

Chairman Wontumi is expected to remain a staunch Dr Bawumia supporter as the former Bank of Ghana top official makes a second attempt at the Presidency in 2028.

The NPP party is currently embroiled in a bitter battle between former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, and the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as ‘Abronye’.

Agyapong, Bawumia’s main rival for the NPP flagbearer slot, exchanged words with Abronye during a Thank You tour/ Unity Campaign event that quickly devolved into verbal gunfire.

Following the spat and some incidences of violence, Agyapong withdrew from the unity tour, organised by Bawumia, and officially announced his intention to run for the party’s flagbearer spot in 2028.

“I want everybody to know that I’m going to contest, so they should be ready…nobody can tell me to back off,” Agyapong said in a statement.
