I Nearly Said ‘Mo Ma Me Steer No’ – Mahama Mocks Bawumia at Black Star Experience – Video Trends

President John Dramani Mahama mercilessly mocked his 2024 election rival, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during his speech at the launch of the Black Star Experience on Thursday, May 1, 2025.

Mahama, after taking to the stage, cracked a joke at Bawumia’s expense, referring to the ‘steer’ meme from the campaign trail.

The President, as an ice breaker before commencing his speech, took aim at Bawumia.

“When (Creative Arts Minister) Dzifa [Abla Gomashie] said ‘you would succeed because the steer is in your hands’, I almost said ‘mo ma me steer no’, but I realised the steer is in my hands already,” he said.

The President’s remark elicited laughter from the crowd at the expense of the former Vice President.

President Mahama officially launched the Black Star Experience Thursday, an initiative of the Creative Arts and Tourism sector to position Ghana the leading destination in Africa for heritage, arts, and the diaspora.

The initiative seeks to take the successful ‘Year of Return’ and ‘Beyond the Return’ initiatives to the next level and supercharge Ghana’s tourism sector.

It has been conceptualised as a year-round event featuring events, carnivals, street festivals and more.

Sector Minister, Dzifa Gomashie, was present at the event, as well as the Presidential staffer for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Abeiku Santana, and others.

Give me the steer

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, created a memorable meme during the 2024 election cycle after asking Ghanaians to ‘give him the steer’ of leadership of the country.

Using a metaphor describing Ghana as a bus, Bawumia called for Ghanaians to hand over the steer to him to continue the driving of his President, Nana Akufo-Addo. He argued that Mahama, as a former President, had already been given the steer and failed and should not be brought back.

Bawumia created memorable moments using the phrase, particularly when he said it in the local Twi language, shrilly exclaiming ‘mo ma me steer no’ (give me the steer!).
