Entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah Baidoo took on Ghanaian man of God Bishop Dag Heward Mills over recent comments criticising musicians/instrumentalists in churches who are paid before performing.

Speaking during the Saturday, April 19 episode of United Showbiz, Baidoo said while Heward-Mills – who is the founder and General Overseer of the Lighthouse Chapel International – is entitled to his own opinions, he should not make it seem that people having different views from him and believing in paying their church singers/instrumentalists are engaging in ‘nonsense’.

Baidoo also criticised Heward-Mills’s claims that there is something sinister about people who ‘do things for money’, arguing that everyone does something for money, including Bishop Heward-Mills.

The Ghanaian man of God set up an online firestorm after expressing anger over church members who expect to be paid before performing.

“Watch out for people who do things for money,” he said. “In my church, I said I am not going to pay people to play instruments, because I play all the instruments.”

Heward-Mills continued that due to this belief, he set up a music training school to train kids in his church on playing instruments to ensure they are well equipped to do so for the church once matured.

He added: “Nobody can come and bully us in church by asking to be paid before singing. It’s nonsense. Here we don’t pay, because you love Jesus. If not, go,”

Arnold took exception to these comments, noting that the Bible teaches setting aside payments for musicians. Baidoo quoted two bits of scripture to back up his point, 1st Chronicle, 9:33 and Nehemiah 11:23.

Baidoo said if another pastor decides to follow that scripture by paying their instrumentalists, they are not engaging in ‘nonsense’. He added that he sees nothing wrong in Heward-Mills’ model of building capacity and getting his church members to serve, but encouraged him to desist from calling the practices of others, which follow scripture, as nonsensical.
