We Have No Time for ‘Smoke and’ Mirrors’ – Mahama Claps Back at Ntim Fordjour

President John Dramani Mahama has hit back at the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, following his failure to provide evidence to substantiate his claims of planes flying drugs into the country.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony for officer cadets at the Ghana Military Academy held on Friday, April 11, the President said while his administration would take all allegations of crime seriously, they also lack the resources and time to play ‘games’ with shadowy allegations that have no basis in fact, describing them as ‘smoke and mirrors’.

The President said, “Let me reiterate that we will take all allegations of crime seriously and trigger our security service investigative machinery to go after criminals no matter who they are. But let me state emphatically also that we do not have the resources and time to engage in any game of smoke and mirrors.”

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces added that the security agencies have multiple threats they have to deal with that their time is better served on addressing than fake rumours.

He added that all should come on board and support the security services by providing credible tips whenever they believe there is a crime being committed.

“Let us support our security services and the Ghana Armed Forces with information that is useful and intelligence that is helpful that will advance their work rather than retrogress it,” he added.

President Mahama’s remarks follow a press conference held on April 1, 2025 when the Member of Parliament for Assin South, the NPP’s Ntim Fordjour, alleged that two airplanes had entered the country that are engaged in drug trafficking and money laundering.

The Presidency quickly responded with a statement calling for the relevant security agencies to investigate.

“I have directed all relevant investigative agencies… to immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable member of parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.” Mahama said at the time.

However, the intervening days have turned into a game of political cat and mouse, with Rev. Fordjour refusing to provide any further evidence, claiming that he only blew the whistle and the onus to investigate falls on the government. Despite several attempts to take him into custody, the Honourable MP has remained elusive.
