The bill to abolish several taxes including the electronic levy (e-levy), betting tax, and COVID levy, is set to be laid before Parliament today, Wednesday, March 12.
Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced the move during a Joy News interview Tuesday, March 11 after the presentation of the 2025 budget statement before Parliament.
According to him, the bill to ensure those taxes are scrapped will be placed before Parliament today, and they expect lawmakers to push them through with alacrity.
During the budget presentation to Parliament on Tuesday, Ato Forson announced that those three taxes, alongside a few others, ‘will be abolished’.
The NDC campaigned on removing those taxes that the previous NPP government imposed on Ghanaians and wasted no time in scrapping them in their first budget.
However, following the announcement, arguments exploded on social media as NPP-affiliated accounts claimed the government is playing games by saying they ‘will’ abolish the tax without a specific timeframe.
According to Dr Forson, however, the bill to scrap these taxes will be placed as soon as today and once Parliament completes the process of passing a bill for the President to sign into law, all those taxes will be gone.
