Owen Leahy, co-founder of the Boston-based emo rock band This is Pointless has died, band member Rob has announced.
Owen Leahy died on Monday, January 6, 2025, Rob announced, following a battle with addiction and mental health. No cause of death was outrightly stated.
This is Pointless is a 3-piece emo vape rock band from Boston MA. Formed ten years ago, the group plays events and have built up a cult following.
Leahy was instrumental in the band’s formation, having convinced Rob on its neccessity after the duo met while both in an alternative high school for kids with substance abuse issues. After both got sober, Leahy called Rob and shared the idea for the band.
After ten years of sobriety, Owen relapsed into addiction in Fall 2024, Rob said.
Leahy’s death sparked tributes from fans and friends, who remembered the late This is Pointless star for his positive attributes.
Jesse Porter, also of the band, said of the late Leahy: “I’m at a loss for words right now. Owen Leahy was a great friend and great band member, he always had a smile on his face everytime we were practicing. I remember the first time we played together and it was some of the most fun I have ever had while playing music,”
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up for the Leahy family, with a goal of $20,000.
