It Could Be An Electrical Fault But It Also Looks Like A Deliberate Action – GNFS Speaks On Kantanmanto Fire Outbreak

Published by

A devastating fire tore through Accra’s bustling Kantamanto Market in the early hours of Thursday, January 2, 2025, leaving traders in despair as over 100 shops were reduced to ashes.

The fire, which began around 1:19 a.m., has sparked investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) into its possible causes.

Preliminary findings by the GNFS suggest that the fire may have been triggered by faulty electrical connections, a recurring issue in the market.

However, officials have not ruled out the possibility of arson, adding an unsettling dimension to the tragedy. Traders and shop owners, many of whom have lost their livelihoods, expressed deep anguish as they sifted through the charred remains of their businesses.

The Kantamanto Market, known as a major hub for second-hand goods and textiles, is a source of livelihood for many traders, making the impact of the fire outbreak all the more severe.

Meanwhile, the GNFS has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the blaze. They have also called for increased vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in markets to prevent similar incidents in the future.
