‘NPP Used My Popularity To Get Votes’ – Asamoah Gyan

Published by

Asamoah Gyan, former striker for the Black Stars, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his fame to gain votes during the 2024 general elections. Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Gyan expressed his frustration, saying, “They [NPP] used my popularity to get votes from the people.”

Gyan’s association with the NPP began when he was appointed chairman of the “Youth and Sports” subcommittee for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign. However, his involvement was short-lived. Just weeks before the elections, Gyan resigned from his role, citing his desire to focus on humanitarian work.

Reflecting on the experience, Gyan made it clear that he regretted his involvement with the party, accusing them of leveraging his status to sway voters.

The NPP suffered a significant defeat in the 2024 general elections. Their presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lost to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a landslide victory.
