Will Robinson, Durant High School Basketball Coach Killed in Tragic Xmas Eve Accident

Published by

Will Robinson, a teacher, coach and Christian faith leader with Durant Public Schools in Oklahoma, has died in a tragic accident that has left the rest of his family hospitalized.

Robinson was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Tuesday, December 24th around 9:30 a.m. while driving his family in Sherman TX. According to authorities, a White Chevrolet Traverse with six people inside – Robinson, his wife and their four kids – was driving around U.S.-75 and Taylor Street when the vehicle left the roadway and got caught in a drainage ditch.

The car was carried by strong waters southbound alongside the U.S.-75 service road and stopped just before Houston Street, trapping all six people inside. Things got worse as rain pounded the area all throughout this period.

Authorities managed to rescue four people trapped in the SUV when they arrived, but Robinson and one of his daughters had been swept away by the water. A search and rescue turned up Robinson’s body but the kid remains missing.

Authorities have yet to officially confirm the identities of the deceased man and his injured family members, but shocked Durant residents have already started expressing their condolences to the Robinson family and remembering Will for the great man he was.

Will Robinson was a teacher with Durant Public Schools and had been coach of the Durant Lady Lions basketball team since 2019, when the school board made the appointment. The statement praised Robinson as a former basketball player and graduate of Durant and Southeastern.

“He returns to DHS after coaching at Achille in 2018-2019 and for two years at S & S Consolidated in Sadler, Tx,” the statement said.

In the role, Durant excelled and became a favorite of both students, teachers, parents and all associated with Durant High School. He was also a faith leader, helping guide many students and others into Christ.

“🕊️ Rest in Heaven lil Bro… this one is also painful, hard to understand or even stomach,” read one tribute from Fasiri Ellison. “Encouraged to see so many people honoring your Legacy and the type of young man you were. A Christian Coach and not just a coach who happened to be a Christian. Well Done Sir. Thank you for leading Durant FCA well and encouraging others in Faith.”

Another post read: “Coach Will Robinson. They called you coach! What a fitting term for a selfless human. You watched one all of your life. You understood what it took to be an influence on the lives of others. You took up that mantle and lived it well…Thank You for living well,”

Others threw up prayers for his daughter, hoping she will be found safe and sound. At the time of publishing, authorities had yet to discover her, living or dead.
