Michael ‘Mike’ Brewer, Folk Music Legend of Brewer & Shipley Fame Has Died

Michael Brewer, one half of the legendary folk rock duo Brewer & Shipley, has died, his longtime partner Shipley has announced. He was 80.

Brewer’s death occurred on Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, after a battle with illness.

Longtime partner, Tom Shipley, announced the sad news of Brewer’s death in a post on social media. He revealed that Brewer’s family had discharged him from the hospital because he was ready to ‘go home’.

“Michael Brewer, my friend of 65 years and music partner for over 60, had to go. I saw him on Saterday at Cox Hospital in Branson and he told me he wanted to go home. He was weak and very tired. They took him home on Sunday and his wife Scarlett called this morning to tell me he was gone,” Shipley said. “So tonight I will raise a glass to Michael and drink to all those years, all those miles, all those songs, and all the heavenly audiences we played for. Go with God my friendl. I’ll see you on the other side.”

Brewer & Shipley were an American folk rock duo, enjoying their peak level of success in the 60’s and 70’s. Their most famous single and greatest commercial success was ‘One Toke Over the Line’ off their 1970 album Tarkio. The song became enduringly associated with the duo who were known for their socially conscious lyrics as well as excellent vocal and instrument playing abilities.

Brewer & Shipley performed with many notable acts, including Stephen Stills, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.
