A fire broke out at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in the early hours of today, destroying ballot boxes from the Ablekuma North constituency. The blaze, which began around 1:40 a.m., reportedly started in the school’s library where the ballot boxes were stored.
The Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly and worked tirelessly for over two hours to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the school. Despite their efforts, the fire caused significant damage to the building and the election materials housed within it.
Adding to the mystery, partially burned ballot papers were discovered outside the school premises, sparking speculation about the cause of the fire. Investigations are currently underway to determine whether foul play was involved.
The incident has heightened concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, particularly given the fiercely contested nature of the Ablekuma North elections. The Electoral Commission had declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC as the winner, a result strongly disputed by the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, leading to mounting tensions in the area.
Authorities are now working to piece together the sequence of events and assess the full extent of the damage to the election materials. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice.
