Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has opened up about the constant criticism she faces over her fashion choices, attributing much of it to her age. During a recent episode of the ‘Receipts’ podcast, the 44-year-old singer and single mother expressed her frustrations over the double standards she endures as a Nigerian celebrity.
Tiwa Savage pointed out how global icons like Beyoncé, who is also in her 40s, are celebrated for their beauty and confidence, yet she often finds herself at the receiving end of age-shaming for wearing similar outfits. “They age-shame me every single day,” she shared. “They say, ‘A woman of your age, how can you be wearing a bikini?’ I can because I have a body.”
Drawing comparisons, she highlighted the different cultural reactions to women embracing their confidence as they age. “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis, but Americans don’t age-shame her. They would say, ‘For her age, Black don’t crack.’ It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.”
The singer also addressed concerns that her bold fashion choices might negatively impact her son in the future. She dismissed these worries with pride, saying, “My son is going to be like, ‘My mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.’”
Despite the criticism, she continues to thrive in her career, captivating audiences with her music while confidently staying true to herself.
