Otumfour Akyeame Panyin Kyeame, the Chief Linguist of the Ashanti King, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, has stirred debate with his recent statement regarding gender roles in marriage. Speaking on Precise FM, he argued that it is not the responsibility of a wife to cook or wash for her husband, though she may choose to help out if she wishes.
Kyeame, a former journalist, explained that expecting a wife to perform household chores purely based on her gender is an outdated practice and unfair.
He emphasized that in modern times, household responsibilities should be shared based on mutual agreement and convenience, rather than rigid gender norms. “A wife can help her husband to wash or cook for him; however, it is not mandatory for her to do such,” he stated.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some praising his progressive viewpoint, while others feel it challenges traditional gender roles.
What are your thoughts on Otumfour Akyeame Panyin Kyeame’s perspective? Making such duties mandatory could place undue pressure on women.
