Donna Kay Rule, a professional American barrel racer was forced to withdraw from the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) competition after suffering a freak accident on her horse valor.
Dona was getting ready for her 8th round attempt on horse Valor when the accident occurred.
The horse who already looked skittish before Dona even set off, barrelled off at full speed down the entrance alley but hit the barrier at an awkward angle, throwing Donna off his back and smack into the ground.
She luckily didn’t get dragged for long but suffered some injuries. Valor went ahead to complete his task before running back, again at full speed.
Dona Kay Rule reportedly suffered a head abrasion, left ankle sprain and a sacrum contusion in the accident,which led to her being excused from the competition following a health assessment.

“On behalf of Dona Kay, she has doctor released out of Rounds 9 & 10. She has chosen to put Valor and her health as a priority. She is currently starting the recovery process. She appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers,” a statement shared on her Instagram page read. “We appreciate all the concern and also ask for some respectful privacy at this time to focus on recovery and returning home,”
The incident sparked waves of sympathy from the watching public for Dona. One post from Cassandra Witt laid some blame at the feet of the NFR for the location the accident occurred.
“Please say a Prayers for Donna Kay Rule and Valor. This is one of every barrel racers worst fears. We run in some tricky arena’s, cringe watching the NFR ever year with this alley and them getting fired up to run,” she said.
Others heavily praised Dona’s daughter, Kayla K Rule (also known as KK) for attempting to put herself between her mother and a returning, speeding Valor.
“This picture sends chills all the way to my core! Kayla K Rule literally threw herself in front of a train moving at full speed to keep her momma from any more harm,” one post read.
Another simply said: “Everyone needs a Kayla K Rule in their life,”
