Faustina Elikplim Akurugu has made history as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate by winning the Dome Kwabenya constituency, a seat that has long been dominated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Her victory marks the first time the NDC has captured this constituency, breaking the NPP’s stronghold in the area.
Akurugu secured 51,634 votes, narrowly defeating the NPP’s Mike Oquaye Jr., who received 50,477 votes. This closely contested win reflects a significant shift in voter sentiment within Dome Kwabenya, a constituency pivotal to the NPP’s parliamentary strength.
This milestone comes at a time when the NDC is making notable gains in the 2024 elections, reclaiming several key constituencies from the NPP. Akurugu’s victory is particularly remarkable considering the challenges surrounding her predecessor, Sarah Adwoa Safo. Safo, who faced backlash for her prolonged absence from parliamentary duties, lost the NPP primary to Oquaye Jr.
Supporters of Akurugu erupted into jubilant celebrations at the collation center, marking a momentous occasion for the NDC. Her triumph not only strengthens the party’s position in Parliament but also underscores the dynamic and evolving nature of Ghana’s political landscape.
