After the 2024 elections, US-based broadcaster Kevin Ekow Taylor couldn’t resist asking Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu and former Majority Leader, a pointed question. With the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now in control of Parliament, Taylor posted, “Will Afenyo-Markin accept to sit on the minority side now or not? It’s up to him to decide.”

Afenyo-Markin spent weeks refusing to even think about sitting in  minority, saying it would bring ‘spiritual doom’ to his party. But now, with the NPP losing ground, he’s got no choice but to face reality.

It all started when Speaker Alban Bagbin declared some NPP seats vacant, giving the NDC the upper hand. Afenyo-Markin didn’t like that and ran to court, claiming the decision was unfair. But after the December 7 elections, the NPP’s position got even weaker.

So now we wait, will Afenyo-Markin finally take a seat with the minority, or will he keep making excuses? Taylor’s question is a not-so-subtle reminder that the tables have turned, and there’s nowhere left to hide.
