Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), has called on Ghanaians to remain calm and patient as the nation awaits the official results of the 2024 general elections. Speaking at a press conference on December 8, 2024, Mensa reassured the public of the EC’s commitment to transparency and accuracy, emphasizing that the people’s choice will be reflected in the final results.
“We assure all the people of Ghana that it is the will of the people, as expressed at the polls, that will be reflected in the results we declare. The people’s choice as President of the Republic of Ghana will be announced,” she affirmed.
Mensa highlighted that it has only been 23 hours since polls closed, and while the EC aims to break its previous record of declaring results within 48 hours, the commission is well within its 72-hour constitutional mandate. “It has been only 23 hours since polls closed. We broke our record in 2020 by declaring results within 48 hours, and we are confident that within 72 hours, we will have the final presidential results,” she stated.
Her statement comes just hours after Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, graciously conceded defeat to former President John Mahama. In a phone call to Mahama, Bawumia congratulated him on his victory and later publicly addressed the nation, urging peace and unity. This unexpected but highly commendable move has been lauded both locally and internationally as a mark of Ghana’s democratic maturity.
