On December 7, 2024, a dramatic incident unfolded in the Obuasi East constituency when an NDC communications officer engaged in a physical altercation with two soldiers who attempted to storm a polling station. The confrontation has drawn significant attention and raised concerns among the public.
Eyewitnesses reported that the altercation began when the soldiers, armed and in uniform, tried to access the polling station. The NDC communications officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, firmly stood his ground, refusing to let the soldiers enter. The situation quickly escalated into a heated exchange, with the officer repeatedly commanding the soldiers to leave the premises.
Videos of the incident, now circulating on social media, show the officer and soldiers locked in a tense standoff, with the officer insisting that the soldiers vacate the area. The soldiers, on the other hand, demanded that bystanders stop filming the confrontation.
In a further escalation, one of the soldiers fired a gun into the air during the disagreement. This incident has raised serious questions about the presence of military personnel at polling stations and the potential impact on the electoral process.
While the Ghana Police Service has yet to release an official statement, the altercation follows a recent assurance from the Ghana Armed Forces that military personnel, including masked men, would not be present at polling stations during the elections.
