Former President John Mahama has taken a jab at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, mocking him over a recent malfunction of the newly launched electronic gates (e-Gates) at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). During his campaign in the Ashanti Region, Mahama joked, “The digital gate didn’t open for the digital man,” which prompted laughter from the crowd.
The incident occurred on December 3, 2024, just one day after Dr. Bawumia inaugurated the e-Gates, which were presented as a significant achievement in Ghana’s digitalization efforts. However, the malfunction raised doubts about the effectiveness of the Vice President’s digitalization agenda. Mahama took the opportunity to criticize the grand ceremony surrounding the e-Gates’ unveiling, suggesting that such technology is standard at airports worldwide and didn’t warrant extravagant celebrations.
“You can do all the propaganda with digitalization you like,” Mahama said, “but if the fundamentals of your digitalization are weak, the digital gate will expose you.”
