A hilarious incident occurred at the commissioning of the new E-GATE at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), where one of the gates failed to open for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during the demonstration. The moment, captured on video, quickly went viral, with many netizens sharing laughs and creating memes about the mishap.
Dr Bawumia, the NPP Presidential candidate who spearheaded the initiative to introduce e-gates at KIA as part of Ghana’s digitisation agenda, was conducting a walkthrough of the system, which uses the Ghana Card for immigration clearance.
Despite the minor glitch, the commissioning proceeded successfully, marking a step forward in modernising airport operations. The Vice President emphasised the importance of the technology in streamlining processes and enhancing the travel experience for Ghanaians.
The e-gates are expected to eliminate manual immigration checks for passengers with Ghana Cards, making airport entry faster and more efficient.
While some praised the initiative, others couldn’t resist poking fun at the unexpected technical hiccup, further fuelling the online buzz.
