The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized a large shipment of illegal firearms and ammunition at the Tema Port, uncovering 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition concealed inside suitcases.
The 40-foot container, numbered MEDU4496951, had been falsely declared as containing vehicles and personal effects and was shipped from the United States was intercepted on November 4, 2024.
According to Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, Commissioner of Customs, the examination was conducted in the presence of the agent and the importer’s representative. The concealed weapons were uncovered during the inspection, prompting Customs officials to involve the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units, who confirmed the illegal cargo. The firearms, ammunition, and magazines were immediately seized, and the remaining contents of the container detained for further scrutiny.
The agent and the consignee’s representative were arrested and are currently assisting with investigations. Brigadier Ayorrogo warned of the serious consequences of importing weapons without the proper licenses, emphasizing that offenders will face the full extent of the law.
