Alan Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, has expressed strong disapproval of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
In an interview on Oyerepa TV on November 18, 2024, Kyerematen described the endorsement as misleading and a potential stain on Kufuor’s respected legacy.
Kyerematen, who has a close relationship with the former president, shared his disappointment, stating that Kufuor’s public support for Bawumia was based on inaccuracies and could harm the high regard many have for him. “Kufuor is my uncle, and I don’t want to say something publicly against him. But what he has done has created a big blot on his political career. Do you realise how people have started making derogatory comments about him?” he said.
Kufuor’s endorsement came during a meeting with journalists on November 17, 2024, where he commended Bawumia for his economic expertise and leadership abilities. He urged Ghanaians to rally behind Bawumia, claiming his presidency would significantly enhance Ghana’s economic prospects. However, Kyerematen pushed back on these claims, suggesting that Kufuor’s remarks were politically motivated and not entirely accurate.
In his remarks, Kyerematen also questioned why Kufuor would engage in such partisan activities at this stage of his life, warning that it could damage his esteemed reputation. “He’s very respected in Ghana, so why would he now be engaging in politics of this nature? He’s my uncle, and his actions are bad. He’s treading on dangerous ground, and he has to stop. He knows what he’s doing,” Kyerematen added.
The former president’s endorsement has sparked widespread discussion among Ghanaians, with many debating the reasons behind his support for Bawumia.
Kyerematen, who left the NPP to establish the Movement for Change, has positioned himself as a fresh alternative to the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the election approaches.
