Veteran broadcaster Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana, popularly known as Abeiku Santana, has voiced strong concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s digitalization agenda.
Speaking at a rally organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Santana accused the NPP of using a series of app launches as a political gimmick, aimed at swaying votes for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming presidential election.
He highlighted that despite the NPP’s claims of advancing digitalization, many of these apps fail to provide tangible benefits to ordinary Ghanaians. “Nigeria is Africa’s biggest music destination, yet they don’t have a music streaming app. Have you ever heard of a Ghanaian-made app enabling Nigerians to stream music? It’s a facade,” he remarked.
Drawing on specific examples, he pointed out that the Ghana Post app, promoted heavily by the NPP, is rarely used in practice. “Ask any Uber or Yango driver if they use that app,” Santana remarked. “It’s the same thing they did with the COVID app. They’ll announce an app, claiming it’s digitalization, but it’s really a tactic to deceive people. It doesn’t work; it doesn’t do anything. Ask yourself—what benefit does it bring to you?”
Drawing a contrast, Santana praised the NDC’s vision for the creative arts and tourism sectors, emphasizing that the NDC, under John Dramani Mahama, has a more comprehensive and practical plan. “We have an end-to-end policy, complete with programs and ideas that will transform the creative arts and tourism sectors,” he noted.
