Nigerian music star Ayra Starr recently opened up about balancing her rising fame with the intense demands of the music industry. In an insightful interview with American singer and actress Coco Jones, produced by Rolling Stone, the two discussed the realities of being women in the spotlight and the often-hidden challenges of their careers. “Fame is tough, so I disappear when it gets overwhelming.”
Known for hits like “Rush,” the 22-year-old artist revealed that despite her rising stardom, she still lives with her family in Nigeria. “When I go back home, I’m still living with my family. My brothers might be making noise and playing video games, so the house is still very much full,” she shared. Staying close to her loved ones, she explained, helps her handle the pressures of fame.
Reflecting on her journey, Ayra shared just how taxing her schedule can be. “I feel like it’s always a lot,” she admitted. “People only see about 1%, but for an artist, it takes a village. It takes so much to get things done right.” She explained how, after an especially hectic year of performing, she sometimes feels the need to retreat. “I did so many shows last year… sometimes I disappear when it gets overwhelming,” she confessed, emphasizing her need to step back and recharge.
No matter where she travels, she seeks out Nigerian food, saying it provides a sense of comfort and happiness. On her creative journey, Ayra revealed her commitment to staying true to her artistic vision, despite the industry’s noise. “I definitely listen to close people around me, but I knew what I wanted creatively,” she said. “I’ve always had the freedom to create whatever kind of music I wanted.”
