EC Disqualifies GFP’s Roman Fada From Contesting In 2024 Presidential Elections

The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially been disqualified from the 2024 presidential election, according to an announcement made by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Jean Mensa, at an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday morning, November 12.

Mrs. Mensa explained that the GFP’s vice-presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, widely known as Roman Fada, who was recently nominated to replace the late Akua Donkor, did not meet the necessary qualifications. The EC found irregularities in his nomination forms, specifically a failure to comply with the requirement for two registered voters from each district to endorse the form of a presidential candidate.

This decision means that the printing of the presidential ballot papers will move forward as planned, with no changes to the positions of the candidates. Akua Donkor’s image and party symbol will still appear on the ballot paper in the third position, as originally assigned before her passing. “Any votes cast for Madam Akua Donkor, the GFP’s late presidential candidate, will be annulled,” Mrs. Jean Mensa said.

Philip Appiah Kubi, a broadcaster with Peace FM, was initially selected by the GFP to fill the presidential slot following Akua Donkor’s unexpected death on October 28, 2024, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. In response to her passing, the EC temporarily halted the printing of ballot papers and granted the GFP until November 8, 2024, to nominate a replacement.

However, due to the issues with Kubi’s nomination forms, the GFP has ultimately been disqualified from the upcoming election, and the EC will resume ballot printing without further adjustments.
