Dean Michael Newman has been identified as the suspect in a fatal shooting at the Monkey Junction Walmart in Wilmington, North Carolina.
A Walmart employee was shot and killed Saturday evening during a shoplifting attempt by a man who pulled out a weapon.
The New Hanover Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to 5135 Carolina Beach Road, the address of the Walmart Super Center in Monkey Junction in Wilmington around 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 2nd in regards to a shooting.
According to their preliminary investigation, a suspect, identified as Dean Michael Newman, was engaged in shoplifting when the deceased male employee and several others came upon him. An altercation occurred during which he pulled out a gun and fired on the victim, killing him.
Newman ran out of the store but was quickly arrested in the parking lot by a deputy.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has declared there is no threat to the public. The District Attorney for New Hanover and Pender counties, Rebecca Zimmer Donaldson, said they’re not releasing the victim’s name at this time pending family notification.
