Michael ‘Mike’ Easley, a star baseball player with the Texas A & M 1989 team, has died following a protracted battle with a heart condition.
Texas A&M baseball communicated news of Easley’s death in social media posts shared on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Mike Easley,” the post said.
Easley’s son, Mike Easley Jr., commented to show love to his late dad.
“Here. I love you so much dad, and I will miss you always,” he said.
Easley had been battling his condition for a few years now, fighting for his life in a hospital in Houston in recent days. A few days back, former teammate Scott Livingstone of the Ball 5 podcast started an initiative to show support to Mike and to raise money for his condition. He printed out “Don’t Count Mike Out” T shirts for $5 and called on friends, colleagues, and fans to all show their support to an Aggie legend.
Tragically, Easley ended up losing his life. He was 57.
The 89 Aggie team
Mike Easley (no relation to Texas A&M baseball coach Michael Earley) was a member of the famous ’89 team that delivered a memorable year to Aggie fans. Under coach Mark Johnson, they put together a 58–7 record (17–4 in SWC play) and were SWC co-champions. They won the SWC tournament, beating number-three Texas four out of five times (with two wins coming on walk-off home runs), including twice in the SWC tournament.
In a regional hosted at Olsen Field including Jackson State, BYU, South Alabama, and number-12 LSU, the Aggies coasted through their first three game before being upset by LSU twice. They finished the year number two overall in the final Baseball America poll, forever cementing themselves as one of the most memorable Aggie teams of all time.
Easley was first baseman on the team.
