Following the passing of Madam Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) presidential candidate, the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a temporary halt in the printing of presidential ballot papers for the December 7, 2024, election. This decision allows the GFP time to select and nominate a new candidate.
Citing Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution, the EC explained that a ten-day period is allowed for the nomination of a new candidate if a candidate passes away after nominations have closed but before the election. The GFP has been urged to identify a replacement and promptly inform the Commission. In its statement, signed by Deputy Chairman Samuel Tettey, the EC emphasized that the suspension of ballot printing is necessary to make any needed adjustments to the ballots once a new candidate is confirmed.
The passing of Madam Akua Donkor, who reportedly died on October 28 at Ridge Hospital in Accra due to respiratory complications, has led to widespread expressions of sympathy from political figures and citizens alike.
