Sad – Assembly Member Electrocuted To Death While Fixing Streetlights

Published by

George Agyei Frimpong, the Assembly Member for the Ogua Electoral Area in New Juaben South, Eastern Region, lost his life after being electrocuted while helping install streetlights.

The streetlights, funded by the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, were being set up in anticipation of an upcoming political event. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, was expected to attend a campaign walk organized by New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi on Sunday.

The tragic incident happened around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, when Mr. Frimpong was repositioning a metal ladder and accidentally came into contact with high-voltage cables. He was immediately rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

His sister, Nana Tiwaa Frimpong, shared her shock with Starr News, saying, “He went to fix the streetlights because they said Bawumia would come the next day. I was in the market when I heard my brother had been electrocuted. I didn’t believe it until we went to the hospital, and people started coming to the house.”

George Agyei Frimpong is survived by his wife and five children.

This tragic incident highlights concerns about the safety measures for streetlight installations and the need for trained personnel to handle such tasks, particularly in politically motivated projects.
