Tom Jarrell, ABC News Anchor Reported Dead at 89

Tom Jarrel, a legendary former ABC News anchor and correspondent known for covering the White House, among other prominent issues, has died.

Jarriel’s death was announced by his family Thursday, October 24, 2024. He was 89.

He is survived by his wife Joan, who he was married to for 57 years, and their three sons.

Jarriel became a household name after working for ABC News for a whopping 48 years. He joined in 1964 and started as White House correspondent, covering the U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

In 1977, Jarriel co-anchored ABC Evening News on Saturdays for two years, and in 1979, joined the network’s newsmagazine 20/20, as an investigative correspondent. Subjects covered included wasteful defense spending, transportation accidents and more.

Two of his most impactful stories on “20/20,” were a report on female members of the armed forces who allege they were raped and se*xually abused while serving their country and another series of reports on the plight of children suffering in Romanian orphanages

His work on the show was critically acclaimed, leading to him winning 10 Emmy Awards.

Jarriel retired in 2002 after decades with the network.
