Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, Founder and President of the World Miracle Outreach, recently voiced his deep concern over the increasing rates of HIV/AIDS infections among students at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Speaking on GTV on October 24, 2024, Rev. Tetteh highlighted what he described as an alarming trend. “The number of boys and girls at Legon who are HIV positive will give you the biggest shock of your life,” he stated. He attributed this rise to high levels of promiscuity among students, emphasizing, “Some students are already living promiscuous lives and have contracted HIV/AIDS.”

The Ghana AIDS Commission has echoed his concern, reporting that an estimated 50 people contract HIV every day in Ghana. This data aligns with the findings in the 2023 National HIV Report, which reveals that over 218,000 people in Ghana are living with HIV without knowing their status, while more than 152,000 are receiving anti-retroviral therapy (ART). In Accra, economically active individuals between the ages of 15 to 49 are the hardest hit, with this age group making up a substantial portion of new cases.

Rev. Tetteh’s statements have sparked a broader conversation nationwide about the need to strengthen awareness, prevention, and support initiatives on university campuses to address this growing issue.
