Sarah Danser, Hawaii Boat Captain and ‘Naked and Afraid’ Alum Killed in Car Accident

Naked and Afraid alumnus Sarah Danser, a boat captain and survivalist well known in her local community in Hawaii, has tragically died in a car crash.

A two-vehicle crash occurred on Diamond Head Road east of Poka Street in Kahala on the night of Sunday, October 20th.

The driver, a friend of Danser’s, was traveling eastbound when he lost control and collided with a parked car.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was hospitalized in critical condition while Danser, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Two people were in the parked car, a woman in serious condition and a man who refused treatment altogether.

After a couple of days in the hospital, Sarah passed away on Tuesday with her father and brother by her side.

Originally from Castle Rock, Colorado, Sarah Danser had been staying in Hawaii for well over a decade.

A master diver, boat captain, survivalist and self-described ‘pirate’, Sarah Danser was known for appearing on the Discovery reality tv show “Naked and Afraid”, the all-stars show, and “Fight to Survive.”

A double breast cancer survivor, Danser worked with Island Divers Hawaii in Hawaii Kai and lived part-time on a boat at Kewalo Basin. Danser was well known for having a fun and adventurous spirit.

News of her death rocked the boating and diving communities and sparked tributes.

“Sarah was of the most adventurous souls I’ve ever met,” a friend Melissa Backwood wrote in tribute. “She wasn’t only a fierce survivalist on Naked and Afraid, but a Breast Cancer survivor who kept an inspiring and positive attitude through her treatment. She loved the ocean, nature and exploring,”

A celebration of life for Danser is scheduled for Thursday, October 24 from 5-8 p.m. at Anna O’Brien’s.
