Renowned British actor Idris Elba has revealed his plans to relocate to Africa, with a primary focus on developing the continent’s film industry, particularly in Ghana and Tanzania. Elba, known for his iconic roles in ‘Luther’ and ‘The Wire’, is eager to contribute to Africa’s storytelling through cinema and help reshape how the world perceives the continent.

As part of this bold vision, Elba plans to establish state-of-the-art film studios in Accra, Ghana, and Zanzibar, Tanzania. These studios aim to provide African filmmakers with top-tier infrastructure to produce high-quality films that rival those in Hollywood, Nollywood, and Bollywood. Tanzanian authorities have already demonstrated their support, allocating nearly 200 acres of land in Zanzibar for this initiative, where the film hub, tentatively named “West African Studios,” will be built.

During an industry meeting in Accra, Elba highlighted his determination to immerse himself in Africa’s storytelling culture. “I would certainly consider settling down here; not even consider, it’s going to happen,” he stated, expressing his firm intention to relocate to the continent within the next five to ten years. He emphasized that to truly make a lasting impact, he needs to be on the ground, driving the development of a sustainable and thriving African film industry. “I won’t be able to do that from overseas. I need to be in-country, on the continent,” he added.

Embracing a continent-wide vision, Elba has made it clear that he does not intend to settle in just one location. “I’m going to live in Accra, I’m going to live in Freetown, I’m going to live in Zanzibar. I’m going to try and go wherever stories are being told, that’s what truly matters,” he explained.

Elba’s connection to Africa is deeply personal. His mother is from Ghana, and his father is from Sierra Leone, giving him a unique understanding of the continent’s potential and challenges. His mission is to empower African filmmakers and ensure that Africans are the ones telling their own stories, showcasing the richness of their cultures and histories. “It is vital that Africans get to tell their own stories,” he affirmed.

One of his major goals is to eventually produce a film in his Accra studio, highlighting his belief that Africans must be at the forefront of the entire filmmaking process, from acting and directing to financing, distribution, and marketing.

Elba, who portrayed Nelson Mandela in ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ sees African cinema as a powerful tool to shift global perceptions of the continent, much like how cities like New York and Los Angeles have been immortalized through film.

Idris Elba’s move to Africa and his plans to strengthen its film industry reflect his deep passion for the continent and its stories. With his influence, commitment, and vision, Elba is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a new chapter for African cinema on the global stage.
