Michael Newman was an American actor and career lifeguard who appeared on the television series Baywatch as ‘Newmie Newman’, appearing in over 150 episodes.

Newman was the only real lifeguard to appear on the show, having started working as a lifeguard at the age of 10.

His Hollywood career expanded beyond Baywatch, appearing in other productions including Zig and Zag’s Dirty Deeds, Enemy Action, and Welcome to Hollywood.

Michael Newman died on October 20, 2024, at the age of 68 from complications of heart disease. Newman had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2006.

Michael Newman born August 21, 1956 in Los Angeles, California (age 68) was an American actor and career lifeguard, known for playing a fictionalized version of himself in Baywatch.

Newman grew up in the Los Angeles area, becoming a lifeguard at the age of ten with the Santa Monica Junior lifeguard program. His brother was also a lifeguard.

Newman became a lifeguard as an adult working for the Los Angeles County. He also worked as a firefighter for L.A County. He worked for the county for more than twenty years in two stints sandwiching his tv career.

His work with the L.A County gave him an opportunity to appear in the immensely popular show Baywatch, becoming one of the show’s most consistent characters.

Michael joined Baywatch in 1989 as Newmie Newman, a firefighter and lifeguard. Newman in the process made history as the only real-life lifeguard appearing on the show about fictional lifeguards. His character was a fictionalized version of his real life.

He was on the show for its entire original 11 season run, appearing in 150 of the show’s 241 episodes, more than half. He also appeared in the spin-off series Baywatch Nights.

His other credits included Welcome to Hollywood, and portrayed Casey in the movie Enemy Action. Forever the run of Baywatch, Newman went back to his job as a full time firefighter for L.A County.

Newman was aware of critical reception for the show, famously saying in an interview: “You thought the writing was bad on Baywatch. Now Baywatch Nights, that was new lows. It was trying to take Baywatch even lower than it could ever go. It was beyond my wildest dreams.”

Personal Life

Michael Newman married his wife Sarah, in 1988. The couple welcomed two children, Chris and Emily.

Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006 at the age of 50.

He died on October 20, 2024 at the age of 68 from complications of the heart.

Matthew Felker, director of After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, paid tribute to Newman: “Mike was not only a real life hero. He was a competitor through and through. I knew how much this series meant to him and his life.” he said. “There were times I wanted throw it all in the trash… and then I remembered Mike. I couldn’t let him down.. I couldn’t quit. He never did. We succeeded together pulling something off that was nearly impossible against hurdles you wouldn’t believe.”
