Drama Unfolds In Parliament As NPP MPs Walk Out Amid NDC’s Claim Of Majority Status

In a scene that felt like a political drama, Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) made a big exit from the chamber on October 22, 2024. This happened after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claimed they were now the majority party. The NDC MPs decided to sit in seats usually reserved for the majority, turning the parliamentary chamber into a real-life game of musical chairs.

The drama started on October 17, 2024, when Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, giving the NDC 136 seats compared to the NPP’s 135. With this change, the NDC became the de facto majority party.

But on October 18, 2024, the Supreme Court stepped in and said that the affected MPs could keep their jobs, which added another twist to the story.

Despite the Supreme Court’s directive, the NDC continued to assert its majority status, leading NDC MPs to symbolically occupy the majority side of the House.

In response, NPP MPs, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, decided to leave the chamber to avoid any trouble. Afenyo-Markin said that the NPP is a law-abiding party and wanted to stay out of chaos. “Let’s not cause any trouble!” he urged, trying to stay serious.

As the NPP MPs left, they sang their party anthem, while NDC MPs cheered and chanted “away, away, away.”

The whole situation showed just how divided the two parties are as they prepare for the big fight in the 2024 general elections.

In the midst of all this, the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) reminded everyone to stay calm and follow the law because stability is important in this political reality show.
